Defying all of our stereotypes of older, white, Southerners (in this case Texan), Dallas sportscaster Dale Hansen came out in support of Mizzou's Michael Sam, who is poised to become the first openly gay man in the NFL.

Why does the culture of men's professional sports make this such an important and controversial moment?

  1. People think men sports are suppose to be a manly thing to do and that it's not for a person that's gay. Even if one of the guys that play sports attack a person or does something bad they are still accepted, but if you are gay, then they will not accept you and will feel uncomfortable around you. The players and other people don't allow gay people to have the same rights to play sports as other men just because they are interested in their own sex which is unfair.
